Wilderness Navigation

Do you want to learn how to explore and navigate the wilderness?

This 4 week series will help you learn how to use a map and compass to find your way from point A to point B.  You will also learn some basic wilderness skills, including what to do if you get lost in the woods (though you won’t get lost with us).  We will we practice these orienteering and wilderness skills while exploring the Marshall Pond and Unity Mountain properties.

Dawn Dextraze, Sullivan County Natural Resources Education and Outreach Specialist, will be co-teaching this series with Samuel Sprague, Sullivan County Natural Resources Field Technician, who has over 20 years of experience navigating the wilderness and has been on many search and rescue teams.

Who: Ages 10 and up

When: Thursday mornings from 10:30 – 12pm for the month of September.  Please be on time!

Where: The first class will meet at the Eco Ag Center’s Outdoor Classroom (near the SCCD Community Garden).  The other classes will meet at the Marshall Pond Property parking area on Mica Mine Rd. in Unity, NH.

How to be prepared: Make sure to be prepared for the weather (rain jackets, boots, bug spray, sunscreen, hat, etc).  Please wear pants and closed-toe shoes (sneakers are fine) and bring a long sleeved shirt and plenty of water.  Also, please bring a blank journal (a composition book is fine) in a Ziploc bag with a pencil and your sense of adventure.  If you have your own compass, please bring it with you as well as a backpack to put all your gear in.  All other supplies will be provided.

Cost: $50.00 CSA/Art Members  $60.00 Non-Members

Field Study

Do you want to learn how to explore and investigate the natural world like a scientist?

This 6 week series will help you learn what scientists do by participating in field studies and creating your own field study.  We will use scientific practices to study things like spider webs, lichen, pond critters, and butterflies.  It is amazing how much there is to discover and learn outdoors when you know how to observe, question, investigate and reflect.

Dawn Dextraze, Sullivan County Natural Resources Education and Outreach Specialist will be leading this series.

Who: Ages 8 and up

When: Tuesday afternoons from 1 – 3pm starting Sept. 5 and ending Oct 17.  There will be no class on Sept. 26th.  Please be on time!

Where: Marshall Pond Property parking area on Mica Mine Rd. in Unity, NH.

How to be prepared: Make sure to be prepared for the weather (rain jackets, boots, bug spray, sunscreen, hat, etc).  It is a good idea to wear pants, closed-toe shoes (sneakers are fine) and bring a long sleeved shirt and plenty of water.  Also, please bring a blank journal (a composition book is fine) in a Ziploc bag with a pencil and your sense of wonder.  All other supplies will be provided.
